Panel Upgrades
Upgrading from 100A to 200A or 400A service. Often needed before adding an EV charger or solar system, but not always.
Solar + EV Charger
Installing both at once saves on permits, handles the panel assessment once, and covers every available NC incentive in a single project.
Raleigh sits near the top of NC for EV registrations. The Research Triangle workforce buys a lot of electric vehicles, and most of those owners are still on the Level 1 cord that came with the car. A Level 2 charger on a dedicated 240V circuit adds 20 to 30 miles of range per hour. A near-empty battery is full by morning. For anyone driving more than 40 miles a day, the difference is significant.
Most Raleigh homes built after the 1990s have a 200-amp panel with room for a new 40 or 50-amp circuit. Older homes in neighborhoods like Oakwood, Boylan Heights, and parts of Five Points sometimes still have 100-amp service, which needs upgrading first. It's worth confirming panel capacity before booking an electrician.
Wake County requires an electrical permit and inspection for any new 240V circuit. Your contractor pulls the permit before work starts and schedules the rough-in and final inspection. It's standard procedure, not an obstacle. The inspection timeline in Wake County is typically one to three days after the work is done.
On the solar side, Raleigh is Duke Energy Progress territory. New solar customers use Duke's revised net-metering riders, where direct use of your own solar still matters most and monthly net exports are credited under the current rider rules. Duke Energy Progress PowerPair capacity is exhausted as of June 2026, so do not build the $9,000 solar-plus-battery incentive into a Raleigh budget unless Duke confirms an existing reservation.
